Reprieve for Devil Crabs?

During the last three winters we have been witnessing, during cold weather, the death of large numbers of Velvet Swimming Crabs often called Devil Crabs because of their red eyes.

Volunteer Coastal Wardens from the Thanet Coast Project have been braving the cold over the last two weeks checking our shores and bays for any casualties due to the cold weather. To date non have been reported.

This is a relief as populations of this specie had taken a real hammering in previous years.

There are a number of theories why we have not seen this devastation this year. It may be that the tidal conditions were not the same as previous years. This year the cold weather did not coincide with spring tides and therefore the low water mark did not reach the feeding areas normally frequented by these crabs. It may be that the population has not re-established itself yet following previous disastrous years or maybe they have just become wise and stayed in deeper water where they are less likely to be affected by changes in temperature.

Whatever the reasons Coastal Wardens will be continue to monitor our bays for any future incidents.

Latest news reported in the Guardian is that Euro-tunnel are buying three of the ships.

Not sure of the logic here unless it is to stifle competition.

Who will be Queen of the Channel?

Choice on the Channel

I remember my first trip across the channel on the "Queen of the Channel" many years ago from Margate Jetty. It was the only time I was ever sea sick after several hours at sea.

Things are different now with large super ferries. So what are the choices now from Kent with the demise of Seafrance. Well P&O Dover to Calais is a pretty good service. There is DFDS Seaways Dover to Dunkirk (old Sally port) , and there is Transeuropa Ramsgate to Ostend.

We did have Dover to Boulogne courtesy of Speedferries who ran a no frills fast cat. Unfortunately fuel costs scuppered them although we must thank them for the lower fares we have today. They were followed by LD lines who said that the service to Boulogne was not sustainable. Unfortunately their crossing times were not the most convenient.

For those travellers to France who want to head south towards the Dordogne or the west coast but not through Paris the best option is Calais whereas Boulogne would be more ideal. The best part about Boulogne is that the port is right in the Town. It is not so congested as Calais and has some lovely restaurants. It is a short drive on a good road direct to the Auto-route. This road also passes a large supermarket where you can fill up with fuel. For many people Boulogne would be a convenient port.

I do hope that a company will fill the void left by Seafrance to keep competition on the channel and that someone considers Boulogne as the port of choice. Maybe we could bring back a service from Folkestone to Boulogne although at present that looks doubtful.

There does not seem to be much news a present about what will happen to Seafrance boats. Whether a buy out by Eurotunnel is in the best interest of travellers is debatable. DFDS does appear to be a strong contender but lets hope whatever is happening behind closed doors will be good for travellers.

Boris Island

Well here we go again. The lunatics have left the asylum again. A London airport in the Thames Estuary?

Reasons it should not happen.

1. Cost £80 billion pounds+. Not affordable.

2. It will require massive infrastructure to support it. M2, A2, M25 already stuffed.

3. The area is a wildlife wetland of special scientific interest.

4. Migrating Geese and other birds means the potential for bird strike is highly likely. We are not likely to have pilots with the capability of the Hudson river pilot next time.

5. We have airport capacity already available and underused outside of London.

6. Demand for flights falling.

Reasons put forward for building.

1. London needs another airport so it can encourage business.

2. It will provide jobs for a deprived area.

3. Heathrow is running at 97% capacity.

Common sense.

Would it not be sensible to designate airports in London aimed at business and non charter airlines and those outside of London for holiday, charter and budget airlines.

Spend only a fraction of this £80 billion improving links. In fact you could even subsidise fares and still be in pocket.

Thanet is more deprived than the area surrounding the proposed new airport. Any extra jobs generated at Manston would help our Island out of the hole it has been for years. Other airports would benefit hence sharing the economic benefits instead of concentrating them in one place.

The need for night flights at Manston would be less as we would not be reliant on the old and noisy freight planes which we are threatened with at present. The airport would be able to generate its revenue from quieter less anti social aircraft.

I cannot understand why Cameron is even entertaining this idea or is it just a ploy to get Boris re-elected? What worries me is politics and money are the forces here. What happened to this Green Conservatism?

Maybe I am naive but isn't the solution in the words of a meerkat "simple".

Blot on our Coast

Enough is Enough

This site adjacent to the Nayland Rock has been in this state for far too long. This area was featured in a Turner painting "Margate from the Nayland". Not such a pretty picture now.

For as far as I can remember this site had poorly maintained buildings until they were demolished and the site left in this state.

For far too long have sites like this been allowed to fester destroying the chance of regeneration in our town. Unless action is taken soon regeneration will stall.

It was suggested to me that this would make a good skate park. At least it might divert activities from setting fire to toilets.

Maybe someone could enlighten us to why it has been like this so long and what is going on.

The Seaweed Saga

Each year we encounter the problem of seaweed. In the summer months it is often washed up on our beaches upsetting locals and tourists alike.
Seaweed is a naturally occurring algae and tends to bloom in early summer. When the wind is in the right or should I say wrong direction it appears on the beach.
Seaweed is good for the health of our marine environment as it absorbs much of the nasties that find their way into our seas. Similarly sunlight and increased sea temperatures also increase its production. Take also excessive shellfish harvesting of creatures that eat algae and this adds to why amounts appear to be increasing.
Many of the older generation remark that we have always had this problem in Thanet but in the ‘olden days’ it was carted away by farmers to put on their fields. However in later years this practice has declined as agricultural land was built on and allegedly more efficient nitrates were used on remaining fields.
After the decline of use for agriculture the local council used to remove it and dump it much to the annoyance of residents in those areas where it was placed.
The favoured action in recent years was to push it back out to sea with bulldozers. This was not effective as usually it only moved the problem to another bay. The best example of this was in 2010 when the bulldozed weed in Palm Bay migrated to Walpole Bay. This with what was already in Walpole Bay ended up several feet thick. Last year, after many complaints, the council breathed a sigh of relief when the wind changed to a favourable direction and the bulldozed weed scurried off in the direction of Herne Bay.
At this time of the year it is easy to put the “Seaweed Saga” on hold and then my word next summer we are again attempting short term solutions to the problem.

Seaweed Uses
Seaweed is an incredible resource. I list some of uses below but as a non-scientist I will leave readers to research the many papers available on the internet.
1. Fertilizer.
2. Cosmetics
3. Pharmaceutical
4. Food additives (i.e. for ice cream)
5. Biofuel and biomass fuel
6. Alternative medicine
7. Baths
8. Waste water treatment
9. Food
10. Animal feed
I am sure there are more but it does demonstrate that there could be an alternative to just pushing it back into the sea like a modern day King Canute.

The Debate
There has been considerable debate both in the council and outside but there appears to be no solutions, joined up thinking or resolve to get a grip on the situation.
Could we not find a use for it and market it or is this too simple? I do not want to create a "stink" but avoid one. We need someone to take a strong lead on this one. Surely we can find a long term solution by pulling all the interested parties together including those with a scientific background. There may even be economic benefits and savings to our council’s much stretched budget.

Unless we find a solution soon the problem will continue to wash up on our beaches every summer.

Winter on the Coast

Winter Wildlife Treats

Now that all the visitors have gone it is a good time to go down to our beaches and coast. Wrap up warm, check the tide and forecast. This time of the year there are exciting things to find. One example is the Brent Geese that regularly visit us from Northern Russia. Often seen flying in V formation from bay to bay and across the estuary. From time to time off Westbrook you will see in excess of a hundred of these birds feeding at the end of the chalk reef. Many thousands of these geese visit the South East each year. If Bonkers Boris' Airport is ever build these geese could pose a major threat to aircraft. Let us hope common sense prevails as an airport here would devastate wildlife in the estuary.
On the cliff tops and under cliff on some days you will see migrating birds using it as a staging post. For a feast of birds Sandwich Bay is the crème de la crème for birders but any part of our coast has its own treats.

Living on the Edge.

Wintertime can be the time to watch for incidents of nature. Recently we have had a number of seal pups beaching. In previous years we have had phenomenon like the death of thousands of Velvet Swimming Crabs.

Two years ago following a serious drop in temperature Westbrook Bay was the major disaster area and last year Walpole Bay experienced a similar incident. The conclusion is that these crabs have been living on the edge of their existence and had moved up our coasts due to warmer seas. When we had a severe drop in temperature after a number of years of warmer winters they got caught out and suffered the consequences. We cannot be certain but this is our best guess so far. If you witness a similar incident this year please contact the Thanet Coast Project.

Over the years we do witness incidents like this on the coast like the unexplained mass of starfish washed up and many years ago Walpole bay pool being awash with herring.

As Tony Beachcomber tells us the coast and beaches are full of interesting finds especially after a good blow.

So after Christmas, weather permitting, it may be a good time to get out in the fresh air with your bins and cameras and make the most of this winter wildlife wonderland.

We are all depressed by the chancellor about the economy but forget what is really important. The following is a reminder to us all what is really at stake. Put speakers on and watch it to the end. Happy New Year.

Reflections

At this time of the year all the media decide to remind us of all the news from the year that is a passing. Not much cheer there then.

However local news looked a bit more promising for Margate with the opening of Turner, a visit from the Queen and Duke and a revival of the old town. Not bad with a backdrop of doom and gloom.

I am not going to mention the local elections in May as they just reflected those of national government and now its all change again.

One thing for sure its been a fabulous year for WASPS and the Westbrook Undercliffe Nature Park.

In February the site became a Town Green (a bit like a Village Green but in a Town). This meant that the site is now protected for future generations and cannot be handed over to developers.

Also in February WASPS became Westbrook Undercliffe Nature Park with the launch and volunteer day when trees, shrubs and wild flower seeds were planted.

In June we got our sign which was unveiled by Mick Tomlinson and established it as a nature park. As a matter of interest is Mick still around I haven't seen him for a long time?

During the summer the wild flowers did well giving a lovely display of poppies, cornflowers and others which I cannot remember the names. The dry weather however meant that the shrubs struggled in their first year.

Not to worry though as we held another planting day on 20th November and another 105 saplings were planted.

Future plans being discussed are an extension of wild flower seeding and we are hoping that TDC will replace the bench that was broken this year.

All this would not have happened without the dedicated work of volunteers with the support of TDC, Local People, Kent Wildlife Trust, Thanet Coast Project and the Westgate and Westbrook Residents Association. Many thanks to everyone involved.

However the year closes on a sad note as Stan the Van passed away on 13th December. He was a lovely chap and supported us with his van serving teas and coffees to all our volunteers on our launch day. He will be sadly missed.

The Turnstone Story

You may have spotted these guys as you walk along Westbrook Promenade. Often I am asked what are these cute little birds scurrying to and fro. They are Turnstones and are quite remarkable. Generally they are a winter visitor although some of the juveniles hang around throughout the summer.
During the winter they feed up on our shores storing body fat ready for migration in the spring. This is when they fly all the way to Northern Canada to breed in the summer, only to return to the Kent Coast, mainly Thanet, in the autumn.
Counts of Turnstones that roost on the Promenade at Westbrook are usually around 72 although they can be found around most of Thanet's coastline. It would appear that this number is fairly consistent year on year. It is pretty certain that most of them that return are the same birds that leave each year.
If you want to do your bit to help these guys please keep dogs under control and do do not cause roosting birds to flight. They need to rest at high tide.

Seal Pup Stranded on Westbrook Bay Beach

A grey seal pup was stranded on the sands at Westbrook Bay yesterday (Monday). Thank you to the family that reported it to the Thanet Coast Project as it meant that help could be summoned. Public and dogs were kept away to avoid stress to the pup until the British Divers Marine Animal Rescue arrived. The pup was checked and no injuries were found and it appeared reasonable healthy but tired so the decision was made to try to return it to the sea. This is a very delicate operation and can be dangerous unless you are trained. The pup was placed in a seal bag without harm or stress. Brilliant job by Suzie and John.

Despite being placed at the waters edge the pup was not playing ball. It was decided to leave it there for when the tide came in as it was away from harm. The coastal warden regularly checked during the evening until 11.45pm when it had disappeared back into the sea. It can only be assumed that it has now returned to its colony as checking all the bays this morning shows no sign of the pup.

Westbrook Coastal Walk

Well-made paths with slope to cliff top.
A combination of coast and open spaces.

Start at Barnes Westbrook Lower Promenade car park. Click on Google map in links on this blog for location. Head west along promenade towards Westgate (left if facing the sea).

At low Tide looking seaward notice the series of high and low profiles of the chalk reef. This is often covered with many varieties of seagulls and wading birds including turnstones, plovers, redshanks, curlews and oyster catchers. A cormorant often visits this bay, flocks of Brent geese and the occasional seal.

If you look back to the cliffs you will find Westbrook Town Green and Nature Park in the making. Shielded by the cliffs and free from traffic noise you may see rock pipits, pied wagtails, goldfinches, redstarts, wheatear, kestrel and other birds feeding on the grasses between the cliffs and promenade.

There are wildflowers in spring and summer. A wildflower guide has been produced; follow the link on this blog. You may have noticed bricked up openings in the cliffs; I am told these used to be gun emplacements from the last war which were accessible from the cliff top.

Half a mile on, there are some breakwaters where wading birds often roost. There is a sandy gully where sandlings normally scatter to and fro. So far this year they are conspicuous by their abscence. In autumn and winter at high tide look over the railings and you are likely to see turnstones, plovers and redshanks roosting. Please be careful not to disturb them.

Rounding the point you are entering St Mildred’s Bay there is a café if you feel like a cup of tea etc. There is also a plaque showing the location of the First World War sea plane station. Otherwise take an about turn at the car park and walk up the slope. Turn left at the top and you will see a viewpoint. You can view the coast both ways. If evening this is a lovely spot to just watch as the Sun goes down.

Now head east towards Margate along the cliff top path. There are sea views in both directions and you will have views of Margate, its harbour and the Turner Centre. Keep an eye out to sea for flocks of birds flying either east to west or west to east. You will see in the middle of the cliff top greens, a hedged enclosure. This is worth a visit as it is the famous Sunken Gardens. There is a variety of plants and garden birds to see.

We return to the cliff top path heading towards Margate returning to the car park via a slope.

This walk can be extended for another half mile continuing along the cliff top path and later the road returning to the promenade by one of the slopes or stairs. Return westwards to the car park along Westbrook bay promenade or even venture on to the lovely sands. If you look at the strand line (noticeable by a line of seaweed) you may find egg cases of dogfish and skate (mermaid’s purse), a wide variety of sea shells or even cuttlefish bones like the ones found in budgie cages. There is also a café open in the summer in case you need further sustenance. Return to the car park along the promenade or the beach at low tide.

Wow weather like this was a bonus to a successful volunteer day.

Pictures above show early morning before the event and during the morning.
When you organise an event like this you do it several weeks in advance and then pray for reasonable weather. Well our prayers were well and truly answered for our volunteer planting day. Brilliant warm sunshine and clear blue skies.
Around 50 people turned out to help plant 105 saplings. The job was done by one o'clock about when the press turned up. Still we gathered us together for a photo.

It is really wonderful how events like this bring people of all ages together having lots of fun in the fresh air.

A massive thank you to Pat and John for pitching their caravan and giving us a brilliant service of tea ,coffee and cold drinks. Also for serving all those lovely cakes people had brought. Thank you all those that brought cake.

This tree pack was given to us by the Woodland Trust to mark the Queen's Diamond Jubilee next year. We even had a sapling grown from seed from the Royal Estates. It can't get much better than that. So the weather today must have been sent to us by Royal Proclamation.

Thank you Thanet District Council for cutting the grass in the week before our event to allow us to plant in grassy areas.

A massive thank you to all those volunteers that turned up to help with the planting.

Help us plant saplings to provide a haven for coastal wildlife for the enjoyment of all on the Westbrook Undercliffe Nature Park on Sunday 20th November 10 am to 3 pm. Meet at Barnes Car Park on the lower promenade at Westbrook.
The event is supported by Kent Wildlife Trust, Thanet Coast Project and volunteers. The Nature Park has received a free 105 wildlife tree pack from the Woodland Trust and need help in planting these. So if you can spare some time why not join them where there will be activities for all ages. Refreshments will be provided. Wear stout footwear and bring gardening gloves if you have them.

This green at Westbrook was planted with shrubs and wildflowers last February. Many of these survive and the intention is to extend and replant.
Tony Sykes said “last February’s event was very successful with around 70 people turning up to help either with planting or supplying us with drinks and cake. It was great seeing the community at work creating a better environment for local people to enjoy. It proves that the community spirit still lives in Thanet.”
“Planting is a fantastic and fun way for us to do something lasting in our local area. We hope our shrubs will help attract wildlife and make a real difference to everyone who will see them. It's incredible to think that in just 5 years, our shrubs could be well established havens for birds and insects. We'd like as many people from the community to come along and help us."

Tree Pack Arrives

All systems go for planting as tree pack arrives.

Arrangements are well in hand for our volunteer day on Sunday 20th.November 10am to 3pm. Yesterday the tree pack arrived. I was surprised how small the package is to contain 105 saplings but they all look healthy and moist. I am excited about this event when we can all get together again to create something to enhance wildlife on this coastal site. Hope to see you then.

Internet Cafe for Young People in Westgate?

During the Summer 2011 a survey of 45 young people in Westgate was carried out.

Of those questioned 13% were 11-12 years old and 87% were 13- 19.

66% were resident in Westgate the remainder from other Thanet areas.

Of all those questioned 72% did not attend any clubs or social activity.

When asked if they would use a youth cafe 82% said they would, 16% said no and 2% said sometimes.

12.5% of the population of Westgate are teenagers.

Westbrook and Westgate does not have any facilities for young people like an internet cafe or safe place to socialise.

You cannot say that the troubles in Westgate with young people reflect what young people are about but no doubt the lack of facilities does not help. Engaging with young people can only help.

Last night at a meeting with a senior youth worker and volunteers it was agreed to investigate doing something for the young people in this area.

There are considerable obstacles to overcome like premises and helpers but it was agreed to try and see if this idea could become a reality.

Basically there is a need for people interested in helping in any way to get in touch. There is money on offer for a youth worker but there is a need for this project to gain impetus.

They need help with administration, helpers in the cafe, and other related tasks so if you are able to spare a little time please get in touch. Please contact

Volunteer Day Back by Popular Demand

Date for your diary Sunday 20th November 2011. 10 am to 3 pm

We are again arranging another volunteer day with Kent Wildlife Trust, Thanet Coast Project and Friends of the Westbrook Undercliffe Nature Park. We have been granted a Nature Pack of 105 Saplings to plant by the Woodland Trust.

Last February's planting was affected by the Spring drought but 50% survived so we need to replant some and add other areas. So if you are up for some fresh air and exercise why not join us in our efforts to increase nature on the site.

More details will be released next month and we hope to have activities for all the family. There may even be cake again.

Our efforts last February have been rewarded by the increased wild flowers, butterflies and birds on the site. We would like to build on this success.

Have you visited the dump lately and seen what people throw away only to be crushed and to join the endless amount of landfill. One of the best ways to recycle is to re-use. Check out:

This is a brilliant site where you can advertise any unwanted items for free. You can even post wanted adds. I have used it a number of times and it works very well. Furniture, washing machines, old TVs or monitors someone seems to have a need for them. By using the site you are also saving landfill and its obvious costs in terms of money or the environment .

Going, Going!

Gone

A couple of weeks ago one of the most popular seats in Thanet was found to have collapsed.

This was reported to Thanet District Council and was discussed at the last resident's association meeting in Westbrook. Our local politicians agreed to try to get this replaced. The understanding was that there were seats surplus that had been removed from other sites. Simple!!

No!! The response from TDC was:

"Just to let you know I deal with the seating on the Foreshore areas - yes the bench was removed as it was reported as broken thank you for passing the information to us - however, the empty space will only be used for a memorial seats for which the Foreshore section is responsible. We receive many requests for them and as soon as I get a someone showing an interest in that area it will be replaced with a Gloster Evenlode Seat which is the standard bench that we use on our beach fronts areas."

Responses from residents:

"We need a seat now and none of us are planning to die so that one can be put up in memory! Again we should say there are some in the shed!!!"

Biodiversity French Style

It never ceases to amaze me how French local politicians take seriously their environment and issues relating to nature and conservation. Many small communities have projects to increase biodiversity and appreciate that these actions have tremendous benefits not just to the well being of its citizens but also in terms of economic benefits to food production with spin offs in tourism.

Visit a French tourist information centre and there will be a wide range of leaflets on nature and Eco tourism many in English. Is it time we woke up to the potential?

Last year a French friend visited Thanet and my request for information about Thanet in French was met with blank looks at the Tourist Information Centre. It appears that information was not produced in European languages. I hope do this has changed.

We need to do more on the conservation front and also to attract more foreign visitors. However our French vistor was impressed that the Cafe on Westbrook Promenade had owners that spoke French.

Warning this posting may have been affected by copious amounts of wine and French cheese.

If you are up for some light exercise why not join us for some gardening at the Westbrook Undercliffe Nature Park. The task involves some light weeding around shrubs planted last February.

Due to the spring drought we thought we had lost several of our plantings but recent rain seems to have revived them and side shoots have appeared. However so have the weeds so help is needed to clear these and give the shrubs a sporting chance.

If you can make it even for an hour or two that would be great.

Meet at the car park (Barnes) on Westbrook Promenade at 10am on Sunday 3rd July 2011.

Please bring with you gardening gloves and tools you need to use e.g. fork and small weeding trowel.

New Sign recognises new Nature Park

Mick Tomlinson ward councillor and Ex-Mayor unveiled a sign for the Westbrook Undercliffe Nature Park On Wednesday 22 June which he kindly arranged and funded. The press attended and a report should appear in this week's Isle of Thanet Gazette. This recognises the start of a long term project which started with a volunteer day in February 2011 with the clearing and planting of shrubs and seeding of wildflowers. The site will be managed by local volunteers and Thanet District Council in partnership with Kent Wildlife Trust.
The shrubs have been difficult to establish this year due to the spring drought. Although some have survived it may be necessary to replant some more in the autumn. Generally the park will be left mainly in its natural state with some management to enhance biodiversity.
Kent Wildlife Trust surveyed the site and recorded plant, animal and bird life. Once this list is completed, it is hoped that a management plan can be drafted. The site was successfully registered as a Town Green in February 2011 giving it protection from any future development and conserving this natural green open space.
Future activities will include cutting and bailing the grass in the autumn to encourage more wildflowers for next year, replanting shrubs where necessary and introducing appropriate wildflower seeds. It has been gratifying that this year people have been pleased to see the experimental displays of poppies, cornflowers and other wildflowers introduced. The site has also a number of native species already thriving on the site and it is hope to encourage these with careful management.

It is also hoped that local schools may like to be involved with projects in the future.

This site has brought together councillors from all denominations with the aim of helping preserve green open spaces like this one.

This is the result of the hard work of volunteers that bagged and removed oil and burnt plastic and sowed wildflower seeds.

And there's more

This June there is going to be a nature walk to identify plants and species on site.

The Mayor Mick Tomlinson has arranged for a sign to be made for the site which is waiting to be installed.

In the Autumn there will be another volunteer day when the grass will be cut and bailed. This will encourage more wildflowers next spring.
We may also need to replant some of the shrubs lost due to the drought conditions.

A very big thank you to all those volunteers who have helped and supported this project. Thanks also to Kent Wildlife Trust and Thanet Coast Project for their help and knowledge essential to making this happen.

It may be too early to herald the success of our work in February by volunteers but evidence is appearing showing growth of shrubs planted and wildflower seeds sown.

With the elections coming up it will be good to ask prospective candidates whether they are up to the challenge. I see that in Westbrook the choice is from four candidates for two seats. Its either Labour or Conservative or both. The above photos contrast what local people can achieve and disasters from development and toilets for sale that are holding up the road above. Walk on a bit further and you come to the Nayland where another eyesore that has been allowed to be created by the demolition of some seafront shops. Dog poo, broken bottles, fly tipping and litter also degrade our environment. We desperately need councillors who will serve Westbrook and engage with local people to sort problems out like these. It was people power that achieved Town Green Status and prevented another development disaster. We need councillors that will listen and work with local people. I can't wait to receive election leaflets so I can make this very difficult choice or maybe I am just a floating voter who is sinking fast in a sea of apathy.

Thanet Extra Get Confused

This is the Westbrook Undercliffe Nature Park. The report in this week's Extra wrongly shows the green at the top of Barnes Avenue by Bridge Road. I think the clue was in the word Undercliffe. I wondered why their photographer did not turn up on Sunday 20th Feb to see all the brilliant work in progress.

I know that Thanet District Council described it as Land at Barnes Avenue in their asset disposal list three years ago but I thought that by now everyone knew where it was after our long campaign to get it registered as a town green.
Never mind maybe they will get it right next time.

New Logo For Nature Park

Kent Wildlife Trust's artist has designed us a new logo. So things are moving. We have promises of funding for things like a sign, a picnic bench and possibly a few benches. If this all materialises then they should be on site before the summer.
In the spring we will be arranging a plant survey of the site as well as checking on recent plantings. It is also probable that this will include a survey of wildlife.

We arrived on site at 10.30a.m. with the North East wind coming off the sea and waves crashing against the prom and wondered if this was going to happen. We put up the marquee and got set up. At noon people turned up in droves despite the cold and after a short introduction by Kent Wildlife Trust's Paul Pearce and address by Mick Tomlinson (mayor and ward councillor) we got to work whilst Stan in the 'Van' got the kettle on.

Wow what a turn out. Well over 60 people turned up to help and braved the cold. Soon we got to work on jobs like digging beds, clearing rubbish, raking grass and helping planting. Other people turned up with cake and other lovely food to keep the crew's energy levels up.

So much was achieved with something like a hundred shrubs planted and lots of wildflower seeds. About twenty sacks filled with rubbish were cleared from the site for collection today.

At the Village Green Hearing on 8th Feb 2011 the Chairman said "Now you have been granted your Town Green it comes with responsibility". Local people have shown that they take their open spaces seriously. I think it is wonderful how green projects like this bring communities together (even local politicians) and can make Thanet a better place. Well done everyone for making this a great success. Can't wait for spring.

Keep you ears to the ground as Kent Wildlife Trust will running other events around Thanet under the Thanet Wildlife Project of which our Town Green is part. Westbrook has a New Town Green

Village Green Hearing
At the Village Green Hearing on 8th February 2011 it was decided by the KCC Regulation Committee that the land adjacent to Barnes Car Park on Westbrook promenade be registered as a Town Green. WASPS are delighted with the result that protects this land from development and ensures the continued use by local people.
The site on Westbrook Promenade remained on the asset disposal register awaiting the outcome of the village green application and we assume it will now be removed.
You have probably seen the publicity about the fact that we have persuaded TDC that an ideal solution for this site would be to create a nature park. This could be achieved involving local people in planting shrubs on the site and managing the grass to encourage wildflowers and biodiversity. This would be part of a larger project run by the Kent Wildlife Trust to manage cliff tops and other sites around Thanet under the Thanet Wildlife Project. This site will form an important part of this project. It is good to have support from TDC, Natural England and the Thanet Coast Project.
A presentation was given at the January Westgate and Westbrook Resident’s Association meeting by Paul Pearce of the Kent Wildlife Trust who outlined the scheme which will be supported by local volunteers.

Volunteer Day
There will be a volunteer day on Sunday 20th February 2011 and and full details of the event are in the previous posting. Following the event we would like to set up a group, possibly called Friends of the Westbrook Undercliff Nature Park. This could consist of local volunteers to help Kent Wildlife Trust manage the site and determine its future.
The success of the village green application will give protection and allow local people to create something on this site for the benefit of the community and wildlife. This also strengthens the protection under European law as a site of special scientific interest (SSSI). This campaign has demonstrated to TDC the feelings of local people and the value of this site to the community. It has also made local politicians think carefully about other sites up for disposal.
I would like to thank all those people who have supported us and gave evidence. It has been a long road to reach where we are at present but it has been worth it.

Launch of Westbrook Undercliff Nature Park

Just got back from the site after meeting with the Kent Wildlife Trust, Natural England and Thanet Coast Project. The soil has been checked for planting and has proved very suitable. So all systems are go. The poster above gives details of the launch and I hope that lots of people will want to be involved. There should be a marquee on site on the day with information about the project and a chance for you to give your views on the future of the site.

If you want to get involved there will be lots of activities to suit all ages and abilities so come along and see whats going on.

Nash Lane

Driving along Nash Lane this weekend I noticed a sign announcing the land adjacent known as the ‘old line’ is to be auctioned by Clive Emson.

Some seven years ago I remember visiting the council information bus in Cecil Square and discussing with a gentleman on that bus why the council sold it in the first place as it would have made a brilliant cycleway to Westwood Cross from Margate. He held up his hands and said the council had made a big mistake in selling this land. This was no doubt an asset disposal too far.

Following the sale the land was bulldozed wrecking all the wildlife that had survived there for many years much to the disgust of local residents. All protests were in vain and the land was turned into an eye saw with rubble dumped on it.

There ensued several planning requests to build houses on the site no doubt on the assumption this would be a ‘brownfield site’ . I understand that these were turned down. The guide price in the online catalogue for the land is £30k to £35k and it is advertised as land for potential development. This could be an opportunity for the council to right a wrong but in these cash strapped days I think this is very doubtful. Link http://www.cliveemson.co.uk/download.asp Lot 58.

Wildlife site springs into action

On Sunday 20th February 2011 that there will be a volunteer day on the site. It will take place from 12 noon to 4.00 p.m. and will be run by the Kent Wildlife Trust and volunteers. If you are interested in getting involved please just turn up with your gloves and boots. Tools will be provided. The day will involve some cutting and planting of shrubs along with sowing some wild flower seeds. There will also be activities for children organised by Kent Wildlife Trust. This will be an ideal event to get involved with conservation as part of a community. Parking is available at the Barnes car park on the promenade next to the site. If anyone has any wildflower seeds spare please bring them with you or get in touch with us.
Following this it is hoped to set up a group of interested people called “Friends of the Westbrook Undercliff Nature Park” to keep an eye on the site and get involved with future events.
Support for this project comes from Kent Wildlife Trust, Thanet Coast Project, Thanet District Council, WASPS and the Westgate and Westbrook Residents Association.

Merry Christmas to all our supporters. Your efforts have paid off and now this land has been saved from development. General agreement has now been achieved that it will be managed by the Kent Wildlife Trust and supported by WASPS volunteers to create what could be called the Westbrook Undercliff Nature Park.

So we look forward to the New Year and working with TDC, KWT and local volunteers to create a special place for wildlife and the community. It is hoped to run a volunteer taster day in February so if you want to get down and dirty watch this space for further details.

Dark Forces

Unfortunately another burnt out car has appeared on the site. Can you all please keep you eyes open and report anything suspicious to the police. There are people out there that want to ruin anything good. lets do what we can to stop this trend of dumping cars on this site.

Sunday Afternoon Walk

Last Sunday we went to Whitstable to have a look at another village green. This one is surrounded by housing and not that easy to find. It was land that was saved from development by a Village Green Application.

The following pictures show what can be achieved when the community work with their local Council (Canterbury) and the Kent Wildlife Trust. This site was awarded the Green Flag by Breathing Spaces.

Biodiversity

Access is from a number entrances from the housing estate. On entering you are immediately into countryside. There are hedgerows, thicket, a meadow for wild flowers, trees and a number of ponds. There is considerable evidence of wildlife as well as space for people to enjoy walks. I must congratulate The Friends of Duncan Down, Canterbury City Council and Kent Wildlife Trust for creating this haven within a built up area. Despite being within a mixed area of housing there would appear to be no evidence of vandalism and it is no doubt used and appreciated by local people.

Who wants to help with our survival?

The big threat

Some of you may have seen the Panorama program a month or two ago. It showed the importance of bees and other insects and how they pollinate our plants to deliver us our fruit. It showed what would happen if this job was not done by these guys and how this would devastate our economy and the supply of food. We take these little fellows for granted and their numbers have decreased.

Don't get me wrong, I am no tree hugger but it makes sense that we should do all we can to encourage them.

Thanet and biodiversity

Unfortunately Thanet is not well off for open spaces and natural habitats. However moves are afoot to stem the decline and increase Biodiversity. Kent Wildlife Trust has been meeting with our council and looking for opportunities along our clifftops and parks etc. to be used to create biodiversity under the Living Landscapes project. Using volunteers it is hoped that sites will be managed by them to encourage more wild flowers and plants. This is a win win situation as the council gets to save the money they don't have to maintain these areas and they can be used to create natural beauty and biodiversity. The local community will be able to get involved in making Thanet a better place. No doubt this could be part of "The Big Society" which none of us really understand.

The land on Westbrook Promenade is one of these likely areas which are ideal. WASPS have been campaigning to save this piece of land from development and now there is the opportunity to create a valuable natural resource!

It is not certain when agreements will be in place but it would be good to know who is interested.

What’s been going on?

Well there has been a lot going on and those that have e-mail have been updated. Where are we now? The site has been assessed by the Kent Wildlife Trust and these are some of their findings.
"The Westbrook site boundary falls within a Special Area of Conservation (SAC), a Special Protection Area (SPA) and a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). As such it is protected under both European and national law. An assessment by Natural England (in 2009) found that the SSSI area was in an ‘unfavourable but recovering’ condition due to the disturbance effects of dog walkers on roosting and feeding birds.
The site’s grassland is also important as a ‘stepping stone’ for wildlife in an ecological corridor of chalk cliff and chalk grassland sites around the coast of Thanet. These support nationally rare invertebrate and plant species.
At present the site consists of rank grassland and chalk cliffs. A number of interesting plant species were found in small numbers and the site seems to be well-used by a range of bird species, provides an important feeding and roosting point for coastal birds and waders and a stopping-off point for migratory species.
The grassland is predominantly coastal and neutral in nature, but due to a lack of management, has become rank in places with the development of some scrub. Being on a thin chalky soil, it has the potential to support many of the flowers associated with chalk grassland and retains some of these species in places. Appropriate management would create a more flower-rich grassland – providing nectar for a wide range of bumblebee and butterfly species and providing cover for ground nesting (and roosting) birds"

Meeting TDC/WASPS
On 24 August, 4 of us met with Councillors Roger Latchford, Simon Moores and with Doug Brown, who is the TDC Major Development Officer.
We presented to them how we thought that this site could be used, if it was not handed over to a developer. The presentation was well received. The TDC believed that our aspirations for the site were similar to theirs.
The most attractive and viable option is to set up a project with the Kent Wildlife Trust to eco-manage the site and to plan its continued use to the benefit of the community. Consequently, we might be eligible for funding to help create biodiversity and, to this end, we would involve local volunteers and schools. A balance could be created between current users; for example, dog walkers and the wildlife. There is also a possibility of adding an additional bench (or two) bordering the promenade and, maybe, a picnic table (or two) bordering the car park. These would be vandal-proof and made from re-cycled materials. Part of the site would be managed to maximise wild flowers and, at the cliffs at the back, to set up some wood-piles and projects for schoolchildren to get hands-on conservation.
The TDC has taken this land off the Asset Disposal list to allow these ideas to be developed. It seems, therefore, to be appropriate to ask for a delay on the Village Green Application while negotiations and investigations into funding and partners take place. Star Attraction for the Next Resident's Association Meeting

The next resident's association meeting will be at 7.15pm on Monday 13 September 2010 at the Westbrook Bowling Club Pavilion (the place where we vote). The last two meetings there have been lively affairs with residents getting hot under the collar about several issues affecting them. The chairman Tom King told our intrepid reporter that our council leader Bob Bayford will be coming to the meeting to meet residents. Its really good to see our council reaching out to connect with local people. Come early if you want a seat.

WASPS Update

A group of WASPS met with councillors this week and presented an alternative vision for the site on Westbrook Lower Promenade to that of putting it in the hands of a developer. The meeting was very constructive and it is hoped that provisional details can be made public at this resident's meeting.
We will keep you posted of any developments.

A Whiter Shade of Green

Grey moves to a whiter shade of Green at TDC.

Well done councillor Green for persuading Thanet District Council (TDC) to look again and consult with residents over the Highfield Road site in Ramsgate (picture left).

TDC also get Browny points this week from the Open Spaces Society because they have removed the Chine at the Western Under Cliff, Ramsgate (picture right) and saved it from the asset disposal list. So are they really changing from grey to a whiter shade of Green?

Bob Bayford has said he will review existing sites under the hammer of asset disposal and has agreed to a meeting between some of his cabinet and WASPS to discuss ideas for keeping the Westbrook Prom Site, green. I will report back to you later on the outcome of this meeting.

Something tells me this could be the start of something good. Well done TDC. It just shows what working with residents can achieve. Keep the good work up.

Another one bites the dust

Another open space for disposal Highfield Road, Ramsgate along with Dalby Square and a great chunk of Hartsdown park.

Thanet is already very poor for green open spaces so why are we disposing of more?

Councillor Chris Wells says "One figure about life expectancy in the area being 17 years lower than the best in Kent has already been widely publicised. In today’s society, to still have differences like that is appalling. We need and will do whatever we can do to change them.”

Err!! Open Spaces have a direct effect on our health and well being. Selling them off to developers does not help.

No wonder residents are revolting. At the Westgate and Westbrook Resident's Association last Monday a motion was passed deploring the Council's action of passing plans for a football stadium and taking a large chunk of Hartsdown Park.

Laura Sandys Talks about a green Thanet. Maybe she should take a look at what our council is doing as green fades to grey.

Many of our open spaces were acquired under the Public Health Act of 1875 for the well being of its residents so is it right to put them into the hands of developers?

Westgate and Westbrook Resident's Association

Again the association will be meeting at the Westbrook Bowls Pavillion following the success of the last meeting at this venue.
At July's meeting the group showed strong support for WASPS' campaign. Other issues like Hartsdown School and Hartsdown Park were strongly debated and action planned.

"The times they are a changing" or are they?

This is part of a press release put out by TDC about Bob's first sixty days.

"It does not make for an easy time, but already Mr Bayford is making his mark on the leadership of the council.
He intends to conduct a review of all properties and sites for sale under the council's asset disposal programme. Failure to listen to public opinion over the sale of sites, including Montefiore tennis courts and Albion House, was a criticism levelled at the last administration.
Mr Bayford pledged all sites on the list agreed for sale but not actually sold would be reviewed, but he warned: "It is entirely possible that we will end up concluding that the sale will go ahead anyway, but we will review each site."
He added: "The lengths that people are prepared to go to to protect these sites may mean that we have misjudged public opinion."
The review will consider the value of each site in light of the current economic situation and whether another use can be found for them by working with local people."

At last it appears that TDC are starting to listen. So far so good and I hope that a line is now being drawn under the last regime. No doubt "the answer is blowing in the wind" and bending a few ears or could it be letters like this one.

A pleasant walk on a summer's day. Its almost like being in the countryside. I hope you enjoy these pictures taken today.

The site was alive with insects and birds today. Several bees and assorted butterflies. Tried to get some pictures of the many grasshoppers but every time I got close they hopped it.

Make the most of this if TDC get their way it will be turned over to a developer.

Consultancy report by WASPS: Economic and Social Study of Asset Disposal

Cost to TDC £0

Introduction

This parcel of land lies between two busy bays. It consists of chalk grassland and has a backdrop of interesting chalk cliffs. It is an informal green space which has become a haven for wildlife.
The coast where it lies has SSSI (Site of Special Scientific Interest) designation and is adjacent to a European marine site. The recent Marine and Coastal bill has significant implications which require careful consideration of all coastal sites.
The land is in part an historic landfill site.
There is a high risk of flooding according to the Department of the Environment.
It is an important site for the Turnstone population that winter here and which use this land to roost on in bad weather.
The site is used extensively by local people for leisure activities like dog walking, bird watching, kite flying, etc. and it has well trodden paths by walkers. Dog walking is banned on the adjacent beaches during the summer.

Proposal for Disposal and Development

According to TDC’s Asset Manager the proposal is to lease this land but it cannot be a disposal unless it is in excess of 11 years. He states that the disposal would not be freehold or a long lease. For the purpose of this report we assume it to be a short term lease of 12 years.

Likely Development Potential

The potential for development of this site is minimal, if any, with the flood risk and suspected contamination of this land due to landfill.
Any development would also be heavily restricted by environmental issues and restrictions by Natural England.
“Site will not involve significant built development. Any use will be community related.” Thanet Matters issue 37. May/June 2008.
Any commercial enterprise would be ill advised to take on a lease any longer than 12 years due to rising sea levels; therefore the income would be low. Bearing in mind that the estimated freehold value of the Montefiore site in Ramsgate was £45,000, a 12 year lease on this land must be worth considerably less.
Any development would need planning permission and there would be considerable opposition from local residents.

Potential Costs of Disposal

1. Cost of dealing with contamination due to landfill £20,000.

2. Legal costs of lease £2000 (even if done in house).

3. Legal costs fighting Village Green Application £20,000. Based on HOOT enquiry. (There are 110 witnesses for this village green application).

4. Seeking permission from all the interested departments £2,000.

5. Any development will mean loss of vegetation on cliff face. This will destabilise the chalk cliffs requiring scarping. Cost £10,000.

6. If development later removed cost of reinstating site to prevent dilapidation. Cost £10,000.

7. Costs of Consultants, contract management and planning. £10,000.

Social Costs

1. Loss of an informal green open space which is enjoyed by many people for recreation. Thanet is poor in this area having less than half that recommended by English Nature. Destroying open spaces affects local resident’s health and well being.
2. There would be a loss to nature and the knock on effects on our survival and those of birds and insects important for natural balance.
3. Loss of an opportunity to create bio-diversity on this site involving the community and schools.
4. Overdevelopment of our coast will have a negative effect on more diverse tourism.
5. Likely to cause an increase in vandalism.
6. Rising sea levels will put demands on the council to increase the sea defences similar to proposals for Margate in order to protect site. If left alone this would not be necessary.
7. The cycle trail passes this site. Development would conflict with cycling and make the trail less interesting.
8. Loss of confidence in council and democracy in Thanet.

Conclusion

The figures given for costs are estimated and could be more or less but it is very likely that disposal of this land will cost considerably more than any likely financial gain.
I think questions should be asked as to the viability of this disposal. The council could be making a big mistake.

The residents of the surrounding area are very opposed to this development. They are one of the highest council tax payers in Thanet. Their demands are very few on the council’s resources. Would it not be beneficial if this land was preserved for their enjoyment and that of others?

If this land is left alone it will cost the council very little in maintenance. In fact it is likely that funding could be attracted to create biodiversity on this site.

It could provide an opportunity for community involvement.

Apart from the economic costs there are serious social costs.

It would be extremely difficult to develop this site in view of the need for wildlife protection, environmental considerations and other legally binding restrictions.

Balance sheet.

Likely cost of disposal £74,000

Even if the costs estimated are half it is probable that we end up with a loss to council tax payers.

New Venue For Association

The Westgate and Westbrook Residents' Association, who are supporters of WASPS, are going to vary meeting places between Westgate and Westbrook. Tom King the chairman of the Association said "we represent both Westgate and Westbrook and want to encourage more people from Westbrook to be involved with the Association. To facilitate this we will be meeting at Bowling Green Pavilion at Westbrook on 12th July 2010 at 7.15pm."

There are several incidents of concern in Westbrook and the relevant authorities need to be made aware and be kept in check. The Association has a record of getting things done. Whether you are a member or just want to check it out you will be most welcome.

Well Well Well. Would you believe it a legal bill of £20,000 and still rising fighting residents trying to preserve a green open space. Well done to the Isle of Thanet Gazette (28 May) for persevering to get the information that TDC did not want released. Others have estimated the cost to the taxpayer more like £80,000.

Today's IoTG (4 June) letter page has a mass of letters condemning TDC's asset disposal policy.

It appears a great shame that local politics is not doing us any favours. The loss of green open space is a social cost to all of us. I quote from the Open Spaces Society "Selling green spaces is a false economy. If you rob people of their playgrounds they are much the poorer. Green spaces help to keep people healthy—it’s far better to spend on prevention than cure".

TDC's recent record on green open spaces is not good. We need a change of attitude before developers cover our island in concrete.

We now have the Marine and Coastal Bill. I wonder if anyone has looked at that in relation to asset disposal of coastal sites. We wouldn't like our council to do the wrong thing.

Bluebells Under the White Cliffs at Westbrook

Well I had not spotted these before but there would appear to be the start of a colony of bluebells on the proposed village green. Not being a plant expert, ain't these supposed to grow in woods and not on the coast? Are they our English native ones or those Spanish ones and how did they get there? Was it birds or do we have an urban gardener? Whatever lets enjoy them whilst we can.

OPEN SPACES SOCIETY DEPLORES THANET’S PLANS TO SELL OFF OPEN SPACE

The Open Spaces Society,(1) Britain’s oldest national conservation body, has deplored plans by Thanet District Council to sell off open spaces, which will be discussed at an extraordinary cabinet meeting next Thursday (20 May). The cabinet will hear from members of the public on its ‘potential asset disposal sites’ and will take a decision on the sell-off at a later date.

Says Kate Ashbrook, general secretary of the society: ‘There are plans to flog off at least two open spaces which are of immense importance to communities. These are Chine (Western Undercliff) and the Eastern Undercliff car-park at Ramsgate.

‘These open spaces provide recreation and enjoyment for local people and visitors. Thanet is depressingly poor in green spaces. According to Thanet District Council’s 2006 plan, Thanet has less than half the acreage of green space per head of population recommended by the then English Nature. This sell off would make matters much worse.

‘Selling green space is a false economy. Rob people of their playgrounds and they are much the poorer. Green spaces help to keep people healthy: it’s far better to spend on prevention than cure.

‘We deplore Thanet’s decision in 2008 to dispose of land on Westbrook Promenade, and we are delighted that local campaigners, Westbrook Against Selling Promenade Site (WASPS), are claiming village green(2) status for the land, to secure their rights of recreation there and to ensure it is safe for the community to enjoy.'

‘We urge Thanet councillors to resolve not to sell off any more green spaces in the district, but instead to manage and care for them in the public interest,’ Kate concludes.

Green Exposed

At last signs of spring and summer as the beach huts are removed from their winter resting space. The green can now be seen from the car park on Westbrook Promenade.

Unfortunately this has exposed a mass of litter that has accumulated behind the huts and the car park is very untidy. TDC have been made aware.

This week there have been several birds using the green including rock pipits. Unfortunately there are several more but I could not ID them. If there are any birders please let us know what you see using the green and cliffs.

How Green is your MP?

Now the election is upon us it begs the question whether we vote for the party or the MP. It is a great pity that party politics are involved in local councils. In a local election I thought you voted for a candidate that would represent the people of your ward. It appears to me that this is not the case. Those who represent a party have to follow the party line to the extent that it overrides their duties of representing ward residents. It also excludes those Independents who try to do the right thing but are kept out of the loop due to the parties. It is a shame that the current TDC Conservative lead council have upset so many local people with their Asset Disposal policy and desire to cover Thanet in concrete. I am in no way suggesting which party you vote for but if voting for the MP and not the party then Roger Gale appears to me to be a jolly good chap. However looking at what happens at TDC if that represents the face of conservatism in the country one has to ask How Green is your MP?

The Open Spaces Society is Britain’s oldest national conservation body. We campaign to create and conserve common land, village greens, public paths and open spaces, throughout England and Wales. Our members include individuals, organisations and local authorities at all levels.

We advise on and assist in the protection and enhancement of paths and open spaces. We are by law consulted on all applications for works on, or exchanges of, common land, and for the alteration of public paths.

· law change to require an independent review to protect users’ rights when there is an opposed order to gate an alleyway, and to prohibit the use of permanent gating orders,

· repeal of the provision for seeking changes to footpaths and bridleways in the magistrates’ court, as this is intimidating and costly to members of the public,

· swift implementation of the new English coastal route and associated access land (the Marine and Coastal Access Act 2009),

· greater use of agricultural subsidies to secure new rights of public access, and ensure existing public paths are not obstructed,

· all public paths in England and Wales recorded, open and easy to use, with a formal definitive list of all public highways, from roads to footpaths.

We have objected strongly to plans by Thanet District Council to sell its land below Ramsgate’s West Cliff in Kent. Thanet Council has consulted local people about this and we are backing the objection by our member, Pegwell and District Association, and many individuals.

This lovely area of wild greenspace, at the far end of the promenade, is of immense natural beauty and rich in wildlife.

It is much valued by local people as an area where they can escape and dream by the sea. It is tranquil and scenic with lovely views along the coast. There are very few areas which are so wild and undeveloped.

We consider that it would be a tragedy if it were sold and developed, and we have urged the council to retain it so that it can be enjoyed by people and wildlife."

Thanet District Council 2006 plan shows "There is an existing level of provision of 0.95 ha per 1000 population. This equates to 1.05 ha per 1000 population less than the national recommended level of provision i.e. English Nature Standard. The recommended minimum standard of future provision for Natural/Semi-Natural Greenspace is 2 ha per 1000 population; to raise the current level and location of provision, given the nature of the district, could be achieved by the introduction of the new community woodlands, consider the development of a country park at Quex and
introducing semi natural greenspace into existing parks."

Maybe I do not understand but does this not say that Thanet has less than half the open spaces that it should have? So why is TDC acting like a vandal and trying to dispose of sites like this and others like our proposed Village Green at Westbrook?
The Westbrook site and Ramsgate site are both on our coast. They are too valuable to lose to tacky developments that we are used to in Thanet.

WASPS Resolve to Fight on.

At a packed meeting last night in Westgate it was agreed to carry on our campaign to register the land adjacent to Barnes Car Park as a village green.

Tony Sykes reported on the result of the period open for representations. He reported that there were several letters of support and one objection from Thanet District Council. The suggested response to this objection was read out to the meeting and was unanimously agreed.

Councillors Tom King and Dean McCastree were at the meeting and pledged their support to the campaign and a message from Iris Johnston was read out pledging her support.

The campaign is a two pronged attack, one the Village Green application and two a petition objecting to development on this site and consequential denial of continued public use. So far there are over 250 names and it is growing fast.

A representative from the Thanet Countryside Trust made suggestions on how this site could be enhanced to provide bio diversity. It could also become a community project to enhance its use by local people.

When initial enquiries were made to TDC about this site it was stated that the land would be developed for community use. A chalet park is hardly community use.

Disgust was expressed about the fact that TDC had engaged a barrister at taxpayers expense to harass elderly witnesses at the public enquiry in respect of HOOT's campaign in Ramsgate.

Barnes Car Park

"A sensitive site within an area identified as an internationally important coastal designation (Local Plan Policy NC2). English Nature must be consulted.

The majority of the site is covered by Policy SR10 (protected public open space), an area of land adjacent to the car park to the east is not included within this designation.

The coastal location will result in the need for a flood risk assessment, the Environment Agency will require consultation.

The site is within an area designated an intermediate beach where policy SR19 applies, this permits development of a limited range of basic facilities, eg beach huts and kiosks, subject to satisfactory design.

The proposed scheme proposes limited development on an equivalent area of land to that omitted from the public open space designation, locating beach huts or similar accommodation adjacent to the cliff and a franchise/ building for, eg Sea Scout use with adjacent open areas, probably on timber decks to reduce environmental impact.

Areas adjacent could be retained as open space, with the remainder of the site protected for nature conservation purposes, possibly including habitat creation.

The existing car cark would be retained and improved, with coach parking and realigned parking to serve the beach huts and the franchise building, with a bins tore provided in the south west corner."

Thanet Countryside Trust Pledge Support

The Thanet Countryside Trust field officers visited the land on Westbrook Promenade (proposed Village Green) today. They have identified rare grasses and several other plant species. The conclusion is that this land should be saved from development. They are going to continue their studies into the spring and summer as more plants appear. Pieces of land on the coast like this are important to nature particularly insects and birds. This particular site would be ideal to develop biodiversity and become a nature reserve.
I would like to thank the trust for their support also their intention to help us lobby the council.

In the meantime here are some of the delights to look forward to in the spring and summer (pictures taken last year).

The campaign continues to save this special place for the continued enjoyment of local people. Support is growing day by day.

"Under Utilised"?

'Barnes car park, a completely under utilised piece of land, suitable for a "Holiday village" development of a few luxury Chalets was identified, and what happened then, your Group immediately opposed the sale of this piece of land and by applying for Village Green status effectively blocked the very proposal you are so firmly in favour of.' The above attack on counsillors supporting our application just shows how poorly informed those making decisions are. There are 115 forms lodged at KCC showing that this land is very well used by local people and has been for a very long time. If the councillor concerned had taken the time to visit the site first thing in the morning he would no doubt have received comments on his scheme by the many dog walkers or perhaps on a sunny day when people picnic, fly kites and admire the wildlife. He may also meet the people who walk the site most days and pick up all the rubbish. If he was not able to visit the site he could view it on his computer on google maps satellite view (follow link on right for Google Map) which shows clearly well trodden paths across this land.
If a 'few' chalets (12) were placed on this site it would deny all access to those using it now and ruin it forever.
One of our contributors sent me this information "The sale of land West of Barnes car park has been on the council agenda before. It was rejected.
If I remember rightly the issues raised at the time were , the natural habitat, rising sea levels and exposure to storms". So what has changed?

Bertie Biggles Fires on TDC

He certainly knows how to place his punches. Westbrook WASPS are not a political organisation we just want to preserve a lovely area of green on Westbrook Promenade for continued use by local people and keep developers from ruining this rather special place. All this political wrangling just goes to show what a sorry state local politics have become.
WASPS are very determined to fight to the end to stop development on this land.
Come on TDC you can either fight the application and waste more council tax money or do the decent thing and register it voluntarily as a Village Green yourselves. This way you will regain some credibility with your electorate. You may even get extra funding. Could this be a win win situation for all or has 'common' sense been lost forever.

Crab Disaster

For those of you walking on our village green or on the beach you will have noticed large numbers of seagulls circling and its raining crabs. A victim of the cold weather is the beautiful Velvet Swimming Crab washed up on this bay not doubt suffering with crabby hypothermia. There were literally thousands in large heaps on the beach. This follows after a similar incident last year when the weather turned cold. Some were only just alive and unlikely to survive especially the onslaught of hungry seagulls.

Despite the cold wind and rain supporters of our village green campaign staged a protest on the green next to Barnes car park on the Westbrook Promenade. The press were there and protesters were interviewed. About 50 turned up with umbrellas and raincoats. Councillor Tom King was also present and I would like to thank him for his support.
It is expected that the report will appear in the Isle of Thanet Gazette this week.
Supporters have asked that we arrange a venue and hold a meeting to prepare for the hearing that is due to take place in the Spring. Watch this space for date,time and place.

Petition
There is a petition which is growing and this will add impetus to the campaign. So far there are about 150 names. If anyone wants to sign this please e-mail WASPS on waspsis@hotmail.co.uk alternatively add your comments below.
The petition reads as follows;

Our Application is on the Move
Hello supporters. Our village green application is on the move. There will be a notice in the KM Thanet Extra on 18 December 2009 stating that there has been an application and that any representations should be made to Miss Melanie McNeir, KCC, Invicta House, County Hall, Maidstone ME14 1XX. Please get as many supporters as possible to write in or e-mail to: commons.villagegreens@kent.gov.uk Our application is numbered VGA611.
Order of Process
The order of events will be as follows;
1. The final date for comments will be 5th February 2010.
2. The evidence will then be examined and any objections forwarded to me for comment.
3. It is likely that it will be subject to a hearing at the end of April or beginning of May 2010.
Developer’s Idea for site
As reported on the blog, in September we were asked to meet with a developer so he could explain a potential use for this land. A small group had a site meeting with him. The proposition was to lease this land to site 12 Eco Chalets on the plot of land between Barnes Car Park and the first slope to the West. The idea was to provide accommodation for people wanting to visit the Turner Centre. There was a frank exchange of views as it would have barred all public use of this land. It was voiced that this development would meet with very strong objection.

Likely Outcomes
If our application is successful then any future development will be stopped and the site will be able to be used as before.
If our application is unsuccessful then it is almost certain to be sold off and will be developed.
It is therefore important that we put forward our best case possible. The first step has already been taken with 145 of you supplying evidence in support giving us a very strong case. However there could be opposition to the application and we need to be prepared. Our ward councillors are keeping very quiet and will not comment whether they support our application. At this stage I am not sure what agenda they are following.
I am therefore asking for help in preparing our case ready for the hearing and also if possible attending the hearing to help put our case forward in the best possible way. Coastal Access

Kent's coast is an important part of our identity - valued for its scenery, rich wildlife and heritage, for its sense of freedom and as a place for relaxation and enjoyment. It is one of the longest and most varied in England.

There are good opportunities for walking, cycling and horse riding at various locations around the coast. There are also places where access may not be so good or could be improved.

The Government's vision for coastal access is to provide:-

'A coastal environment where rights to walk along the length of the English coast lie within a wildlife and landscape corridor that offers enjoyment, understanding of the natural environment and a high quality experience; and is managed sustainably in the context of a changing coastline.'
This vision seems in conflict with Thanet District Council's vision of Asset Stripping particularly on our coastline.

It continues to say.

The Marine and Coastal Access Bill is currently going through Parliament.The Bill is likely to receive Royal Assent in November. It aims to improve access around Kent's coast (and all of England) by creating a long distance walking route and creating a margin of accessible land where people will be able to spread out and explore, rest or picnic should they wish to.

I understand that Thanet District Council have decided that asset disposal of land subject to Village Green applications should be put on hold until the outcomes are known.
This gives breathing space and time for TDC to realise what a mistake it is to sell off our coastline sites. See recent suggested sites for consultation on this link http://www.thanet.gov.uk/environment__planning/asset_disposal_site_2010_to_11.aspx
The new marine conservation bill and coastal path will only add weight to what we are trying to do with the land adjacent to Barnes Car park.

The story so far is as follows:
Following the consultation exercise by the council they published the decision to sell this land for development with a photo. It was at this time that it was realised what plot of land they were actually wanting to sell.
Several e-mails later to the council asking them to re-open consultations failed. One of our ward counsellors did contact us saying it would only be developed for community use. When asked what that meant the answer was either a cafe or what he called eco-pods posibly even coach parking. It was at this point that it was realised that it would be lost to development. Recent legislation on Village Green registration was suggested and hence an application was made.
It was necessary to support this application with evidence that this land had been used by the public for at least 20 years and is still used.
A leaflet was delivered to properties with 1/4 mile radius of the site. It was amazing the reaction it received. There was a considerable amount of disquiet about the way the council had mislead everyone and as a result a massive amount of evidence was gathered on KCC forms.

There has been support from Counsellors Iris Johnston, Tom King and County Counsellor Robert Burgess as well as the Westbrook and Westgate residents Association. Regrettably despite several e-mails to our ward counsellors Mick Tomlinson and Dean Mc Castree none of which received a reply has there been any indication as to whether they support or oppose our application.

In September we were asked to meet with a developer so he could explain a potential use for this land. A small group had a site meeting with him. The proposition was to lease this land to site 12 Eco Chalets on the plot of land between Barnes Car Park and the first slope to the West. The idea was to provide accommodation for people wanting to visit the Turner Centre. There was a frank exchange of views as it would have barred all public use of this land. It was voiced that this development would meet with very strong objection. This land is used for walking, dog walking, nature enthusiasts, children, cycling, kite flying, picnics, bar-b-Q's and a pleasant place to get away from the adjoining busy bays. It has developed into and continues to develop into a haven for birds and insects and it has been reported bats. There are wild flowers and in the spring daffodils. The cycle route passes it and it adds to the joy of coastline. We use it and do not want to lose it.

WASPS

This blog is set up to support WASPS (Westbrook Against Selling Promenade Site). As a result of Thanet District Council's Asset Disposal Policy they want to sell off a piece of land adjacent to Barnes Car Park on the Westbrook Promenade for development. Unfortunately in the consultation exercise it was described as land at Barnes Avenue so residents were unaware that this land was on the promenade. When they were informed where it was they wanted to object. Unfortunately their ward counsellors were not listening to their pleas so it was decided to apply to register this land as a Village Green. Support for this has been overwhelming and evidence from 144 people has been submitted to KCC .

The people of this locality are very fond of this piece of land and do not want it developed. It is used by so many people and has been for several years. It is a quiet natural place between two busy bays and has become haven for wildlife.

The application for Village Green is on the KCC register and is likely to actioned soon so watch this space for further updates coming soon.
